Building Healthier Habits Early

This fall, more than 2,000 students from 20 elementary schools will lace up their sneakers to participate in our Westly’s Mile program.

In partnership with the American Heart Association, this initiative has played a critical role in helping children across West Orange build healthy habits. In addition, studies show that kids who are regularly active feel better, have improved mental health, build self-esteem, and decrease and prevent conditions such as anxiety and depression.

Program surveys from the 2024-2025 school year showed that not only did 96% of children have an increase in their own physical activity, but 94% of families also increased their family physical activity. Last year, students who participated in the program completed more than 35,000 miles – or running from Florida to California 15 times!
